Amoxil is a broad-spectrum antibiotic from the aminopenicillin group. Its antibacterial mechanism works by inhibiting the construction of cell walls in bacteria sensitive to Amoxicillin. This action prevents bacterial propagation, as cell walls protect bacteria from their environment. Amoxicillin is effective against H. influenzae, N. gonorrhoea, E. coli, Pneumococci, Streptococci, and certain strains of Staphylococci. However, microorganisms producing penicillase are resistant to Amoxicillin. The medication is ineffective against mycobacteria, mycoplasmas, genus Rickettsia, fungi, amoeba, plasmodium, viruses, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Proteus spp. (excluding P. mirabilis).
Take Amoxil exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Inform your doctor if you are allergic to cephalosporins (e.g., Ceclor, Ceftin, Duricef, Keflex), have asthma, serious liver or kidney impairment, bleeding or blood clotting disorders, mononucleosis, or a history of allergic reactions. You may take Amoxicillin with or without food. Chew chewable tablets before swallowing, and swallow capsules whole with a glass of water.
Do not use Amoxicillin if you are allergic to it or any other penicillin antibiotic.
Do not double the dose. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed one and continue with the regular schedule.
Symptoms of overdose include vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, and water-electrolyte imbalances. Seek medical help immediately.
Store Amoxicillin at room temperature between 59°F and 86°F (15°C and 30°C), away from light and moisture.
