Common use
Alendronate is a bisphosphonate medication used to treat and prevent osteoporosis in postmenopausal women and men, as well as bone loss caused by steroid use. It helps increase bone mass and reduce the risk of fractures, especially in the spine and hips. Alendronate works by slowing down the breakdown of bone, allowing the body to rebuild stronger bone tissue. It is commonly prescribed for long-term bone health maintenance.
Dosage and direction
Alendronate is usually taken once daily or once weekly by mouth, depending on the condition and dosing form. It must be taken first thing in the morning with a full glass of water, at least 30 minutes before any food, drink, or other medications. After taking the tablet, you must remain upright (sitting or standing) for at least 30 minutes. Following these instructions is essential to prevent irritation of the esophagus.
Precautions
- Tell your doctor if you have problems with your esophagus, low calcium levels, kidney issues, or difficulty sitting upright
- Not suitable for people who cannot remain upright after dosing or those with certain digestive disorders
- Ensure adequate calcium and vitamin D intake while on this medication
- Regular dental check-ups are advised due to potential jaw bone problems
