Aldara contains the active ingredient imiquimod and is used to treat precancerous skin lesions, known as actinic keratosis, and genital warts, caused by Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). It works by stimulating the human immune system to fight the virus.
Always wash your hands thoroughly before use. Apply a thin layer of the cream to the affected area three times weekly. Gently rub the cream into your skin. Avoid using tight bandages that limit air exposure. Wash off the cream 6-10 hours after application. Be careful to avoid contact with the eyes. Treatment typically continues until the warts are completely gone or for up to 16 weeks. For actinic keratosis, the drug is usually applied once daily for 2 days a week. Leave the cream on for 8 hours before washing it off. Treatment lasts for 16 weeks.
While using Aldara, avoid sexual contact. The medication can weaken latex rubber condoms, diaphragms, and cervical caps. Do not use other skin products during treatment. If you experience flu-like symptoms or skin irritation, inform your doctor, as your dosage may need adjustment.
Do not use Aldara if you are pregnant or allergic to its components.
The most common adverse reactions include redness, swelling, itching, burning, sores, blistering, ulcerations, skin peeling, scabbing, crusting, or changes in skin color.
Since Aldara is applied topically and not absorbed systemically, it is unlikely to interact with other drugs.
If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. Skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not double the dose to compensate for a missed one.
Signs of overdose may include an increased risk of severe local skin reactions and potential systemic reactions.
Store Aldara in a dry place away from sunlight at room temperature, between 15-30°C (59-86°F).
