Magnium and potassium-sparing diuretic and aldosterone antagonist. It competitively associates with aldosterone receptors in the distal parts of the nephron. It has a diuretic effect, increases the excretion of sodium ions, and decreases the excretion of potassium and magnium. Additionally, it decreases urinary acidity. The diuretic effect of the medicine is moderate and typically appears after 2-5 days of treatment, continuing for 2-3 days after discontinuation. A mild hypotensive effect usually develops after 2-3 weeks of treatment. Aldactone is used in combination with other drugs to treat hypertension. It also helps remove excess fluid from the body in conditions such as congestive heart failure, cirrhosis of the liver, and kidney disease.
The daily dose for adults with arterial hypertension or edema syndrome is 50-100 mg, divided into 1-2 intakes per day. If necessary, the dose may be gradually increased to 200 mg daily. The duration of treatment should not be less than two weeks. For other conditions like chronic congestive heart failure, cirrhosis, or nephrotic syndrome, different dosages may be recommended. Always consult your doctor before starting this medication. Aldactone is best taken after a meal, with a single dose before bedtime being the most preferable.
Avoid consuming alcohol as it can increase some of the side effects of Aldactone. Limit salt intake, as excess salt may cause your body to retain water, reducing the effectiveness of the medication. Do not use salt substitutes or low-sodium milk products containing potassium. Avoid overheating or dehydration during exercise. Discuss with your doctor the appropriate amount of liquids to consume. Do not stop taking this medicine even if you feel better if you are being treated for high blood pressure.
Hypersensitivity, Addison's disease, hyperkalemia, hyperpotassemia, concomitant use with potassium supplements or other potassium-sparing diuretics (such as Aldactazide, amiloride, triamterene), hyponatremia, chronic kidney failure, diabetic nephropathy, anuria, liver failure, diabetes with chronic kidney failure, pregnancy, and other conditions. Use this medicine only if prescribed by your doctor.
Side effects may include headache, diarrhea, cramps, drowsiness, rash, nausea, vomiting, impotence, irregular menstrual periods, and irregular hair growth. Fluid and electrolyte imbalances are possible, so patients should be monitored carefully. Breast enlargement may occur depending on the dose and duration of therapy, but this condition is usually reversible upon discontinuation of Aldactone.
Aldactone can lower blood sodium levels while increasing blood potassium levels. Excessively high potassium levels can lead to potentially life-threatening heart rhythm abnormalities. Therefore, it is usually not administered with other agents that increase potassium levels. Aldactone may also elevate blood digoxin levels to toxic levels.
Never take a double dose of this medication. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule.
Seek immediate medical attention if you suspect an overdose. Symptoms may include drowsiness, confusion, red skin rash, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea.
Store Aldactone at room temperature, below 25°C (77°F).
