Common Use

Advair Diskus is used for treating asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) linked to chronic bronchitis. It is available as an oral inhaler containing two active ingredients: fluticasone propionate (Flovent) and salmeterol (Serevent). Fluticasone propionate is a corticosteroid that reduces lung inflammation, while salmeterol, a long-acting beta2-agonist (LABA), relaxes the bronchial muscles, widens airways, and provides long-lasting relief. Together, these components help prevent wheezing and shortness of breath.

Dosage and Direction

Advair Diskus should be taken twice daily, in the morning and evening, with doses spaced 12 hours apart. Avoid using it more frequently than prescribed, as overuse may worsen heart irregularities. Exercise caution if you have a heart condition or high blood pressure while using this medication.

Precautions

Stopping Advair Diskus suddenly can worsen asthma or other breathing issues like emphysema or bronchitis. This medication is not intended to treat sudden asthma or bronchitis attacks. Do not use it if your asthma is well-controlled with other drugs or if you only need occasional short-acting medications. Inform your doctor if you are taking ritonavir (an anti-HIV drug) or if you have a history of allergies, diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, immune system issues, liver or kidney failure, thyroid disorders, seizures, osteoporosis, or exposure to chickenpox or measles. Pregnant or breastfeeding individuals should also consult their doctor before use.

Contraindications

Advair Diskus is not suitable for treating status asthmaticus or sudden asthma or COPD attacks. It is also contraindicated for individuals allergic to its ingredients and for children under 4 years old.

Possible Side Effects

This medication may increase the risk of pneumonia. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience fever, chills, increased mucus production, changes in mucus color, worsening cough, or breathing difficulties. Notify your doctor if your breathing problems worsen during treatment.

Drug Interactions

Inform your doctor if you are taking tricyclic antidepressants (e.g., amitriptyline, imipramine), MAO inhibitors (e.g., phenelzine, tranylcypromine), beta blockers (e.g., atenolol, propranolol), ketoconazole, long-acting inhalers (e.g., formoterol, salmeterol), ritonavir, or diuretics (e.g., furosemide, hydrochlorothiazide).

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, but skip it if it's almost time for your next dose. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one. Take doses at the same time daily to maintain consistency.

Overdose

Symptoms of overdose may include severe headaches, rapid or irregular heartbeat, muscle cramps, or tremors. Seek immediate medical help if you experience these symptoms.

Storage

Store Advair Diskus at room temperature in a tightly sealed container, away from moisture, sunlight, children, and pets.
