Common Use

Acular is a non‑steroidal anti‑inflammatory drug (NSAID) administered as eye drops to relieve pain and inflammation after eye surgery or in conditions such as conjunctivitis. The active ingredient, ketorolac, works by reducing the production of chemicals that cause swelling and discomfort.

Dosage and Direction

Acular is typically applied as one to two drops in the affected eye(s) up to four times daily. Your exact dosage may vary based on your condition and your doctor's instructions.

To use the drops safely:

  1. Wash your hands before and after applying the medication.
  2. Tilt your head back slightly and pull down the lower eyelid.
  3. Instill the prescribed number of drops without touching the dropper tip to any surface.
  4. Close the eye gently and press the inner corner for about one minute to prevent drainage.

Precautions

  • Inform your physician of any history of eye problems such as glaucoma, cataracts, or corneal ulcers.
  • Ketorolac may cause temporary blurred vision or mild discomfort; avoid driving or operating machinery until you know how the drops affect you.
  • Remove contact lenses before using the drops and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting them.

Contraindications

  • Do not use Acular if you are allergic to ketorolac, other NSAIDs, or any component of the formulation.
  • Avoid use in patients with active eye infections or a history of severe allergic reactions to NSAIDs.

Possible Side Effects

  • Common: eye irritation, burning or stinging upon application, dry eyes.
  • Less common: blurred vision, headache, photophobia (sensitivity to light).
  • Rare but serious: secondary eye infections or corneal damage, especially with prolonged use.

Drug Interactions

  • Avoid concurrent use of other topical ophthalmic medications without a doctor's guidance.
  • Inform your healthcare provider if you are taking oral NSAIDs, blood thinners, or any other prescription/over‑the‑counter drugs.

Missed Dose

If you remember a missed dose, apply it as soon as you notice, unless it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. Do not double‑dose to compensate for a missed application.

Overdose

Acular overdose is unlikely due to its localized use. Accidental ingestion may cause stomach upset, nausea, or dizziness; seek medical attention immediately if this occurs.

Storage

Store the bottle at room temperature, away from direct light and moisture. Keep the container tightly closed and out of reach of children. Discard the eye drops after the expiration date printed on the label.
