Actos is used to control high blood sugar in type 2 diabetes (non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus). This form of diabetes is typically caused by the body's inability to respond correctly to insulin, either due to insufficient insulin production or the cells ignoring insulin. Insulin is the natural hormone that helps transfer sugar from the blood into the cells, where it is converted into energy. Actos works by improving the body's response to insulin rather than increasing insulin production. It also reduces the liver's production of unnecessary sugar.
Actos (and rosiglitazone maleate) can be used alone or in combination with insulin injections or other oral diabetes medications such as glipizide, glyburide, or metformin hydrochloride.
Take this medication by mouth, with or without food, usually once daily. Follow your healthcare provider's instructions, as the dosage is based on your medical condition, response to therapy, and whether you are taking other anti-diabetic medications. Take Actos at the same time each day to maximize its benefits. Regularly monitor your blood glucose levels. It may take 2 to 3 months to experience the full benefits. Continue taking all other diabetes medications as prescribed by your doctor.
Before taking Actos, inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it, other "glitazones" (such as rosiglitazone or troglitazone), or have any other allergies. Do not use Actos if you have type 1 diabetes, heart failure (acute or worsening), diabetic ketoacidosis, or liver dysfunction. Share your medical history, especially if you have heart disease, liver problems, fluid in your lungs, swelling (edema), or anemia. Be cautious with activities requiring alertness, as Actos may cause blurred vision, dizziness, or drowsiness. Limit alcohol consumption to reduce the risk of hypoglycemia. Notify your doctor if you experience fever, infection, injury, or surgery, as these may affect blood sugar control. Women with fertility issues may experience menstrual cycle changes; consult your doctor about reliable contraception. Actos should only be used during pregnancy in life-threatening situations. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor, who may recommend insulin as an alternative. Breastfeeding is not advised while using Actos; consult your doctor before breastfeeding.
Common side effects of Actos include rapid heartbeat, sweating, confusion, blurred vision, headache, numbness or tingling in the mouth, weakness, shakiness, dizziness, tiredness, paleness, and sudden hunger.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless it is almost time for your next dose. Skip the missed dose and resume your regular schedule. Do not double the dose to make up for the missed one.
Seek emergency medical attention if you suspect an overdose. Symptoms of low blood sugar may include hunger, weakness, dizziness, headache, irritability, drowsiness, fainting, sweating, confusion, tremors, fast heartbeat, seizures, or coma.
Inform your healthcare provider if you are taking other anti-diabetic medications (insulin, metformin, sulfonylureas like glyburide) or herbal/natural products (fenugreek, ginseng, gymnema). Actos may reduce the effectiveness of certain contraceptives, so use additional reliable birth control. Do not start or stop any medications without consulting your doctor or pharmacist.
Store Actos at room temperature in a tightly sealed container, away from moisture and humidity.
