Actigall is a bile acid that reduces cholesterol production in the liver and absorption in the intestines. It helps dissolve cholesterol-based gallstones and improves bile flow in primary biliary cirrhosis. This medication is prescribed to treat small gallstones in patients who cannot undergo gallbladder surgery. It is also used to prevent gallstones in individuals on rapid-weight-loss diets and may be used for other purposes, including treating primary biliary cirrhosis. Note that Actigall is not effective for calcified gallstones.
Take Actigall exactly as directed by your doctor. The dosage depends on your medical condition and response to treatment. Using this medication regularly at the same times each day will maximize its benefits. Do not increase the dosage or frequency without consulting your doctor, as this may raise the risk of serious side effects.
Before starting Actigall, inform your doctor about all medications (prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal) and your complete medical history. Do not use this medication if you are allergic to ursodiol or other bile acids. Actigall may not be suitable for individuals with biliary tract issues or certain liver and pancreas diseases. Avoid driving or operating machinery if this drug causes dizziness. Limit alcohol consumption. Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed, and consult your doctor before breastfeeding.
Actigall is not effective for calcified cholesterol stones, radiopaque stones, or radiolucent bile pigment stones. It is contraindicated in patients with conditions such as unremitting acute cholecystitis, cholangitis, biliary obstruction, gallstone pancreatitis, or biliary-gastrointestinal fistula, as well as those allergic to bile acids.
Common side effects include stomach upset, nausea, diarrhea, dizziness, back pain, hair loss, or cough. If these persist or worsen, contact your doctor. Seek immediate medical attention for serious side effects such as weakness, swelling, increased thirst/urination, or signs of infection. Rarely, severe allergic reactions may occur, causing symptoms like rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, or trouble breathing.
Actigall may interact with other medications, altering their effects. Inform your doctor if you are using aluminum-based antacids, cholesterol-lowering drugs, estrogens, or oral contraceptives. Do not start, stop, or adjust any medication dosage without consulting your doctor or pharmacist first.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule.
Do not exceed the prescribed dose. If an overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.
Store Actigall at room temperature in a tightly closed container, away from moisture and heat.
