Aciphex is an antiulcer medication that inhibits proton pumps (PPIs) and blocks stomach acid production. It works by blocking the (H+,K+)-ATPase enzyme system, which stops the final stage of hydrochloric acid production. After oral intake, the antisecretory effect begins within one hour and peaks in 2-4 hours. Aciphex is used to treat stomach ulcers, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, gastroesophageal reflux disease, and to eradicate Helicobacter pylori in patients with stomach ulcers or chronic gastritis.
The dosage should be determined by your doctor based on your condition. For acute duodenal ulcers, the usual dose is one tablet (20 mg) taken once daily in the morning for 4-6 weeks. For H. pylori infection, Aciphex may be needed for only one week. Follow your doctor's instructions and avoid taking more than prescribed. Swallow the tablets whole with a glass of water, and do not crush, split, or chew them. Aciphex can be taken with or without food, as food has minimal impact on its absorption.
Inform your doctor if you have severe liver disease or stomach cancer before taking Aciphex. This medication is not recommended for children. While it is not expected to harm an unborn baby, notify your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Aciphex is sometimes used with antibiotics, so follow your doctor's instructions for all medications to ensure optimal treatment results.
Aciphex is contraindicated for individuals who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or hypersensitive to Aciphex or other benzimidazoles such as omeprazole (Prilosec, Zegerid), lansoprazole (Prevacid), pantoprazole (Protonix), rabeprazole (Aciphex), and esomeprazole (Nexium).
Side effects may include allergic reactions (hives, rash, swelling of the tongue and face), headache, dizziness, dry mouth, upset stomach, diarrhea, constipation, insomnia, nervousness, rash, or itching. Contact your doctor if any side effects are severe or persistent.
Aciphex may interact with medications whose absorption depends on stomach acidity. It reduces the absorption and blood concentration of ketoconazole (Nizoral) while increasing the absorption and blood concentration of digoxin (Lanoxin). This can reduce the effectiveness of ketoconazole and increase the toxicity of digoxin.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular schedule.
Symptoms of Aciphex overdose are unknown. If you suspect an overdose, seek emergency medical attention immediately.
Store Aciphex at room temperature (59-77°F or 15-25°C), away from light, moisture, children, and pets.
